Sitting on the west coast of Portugal south of Porto and on the Ria de Aveiro saltwater lagoon is the small town of Aveiro which is renowned for its canals and colourful Moliceiros boats. The area was historically famed for its seaweed, salt and plentiful fish but today Aveiro is a prosperous university city with ornate Art Nouveau buildings and many religious buildings.
Aveiro is a popular tourist destination to see the canals and take rides on the traditional Moliceiros boats.
