The Chinese population in Terengganu State, Malaysia may be very small in comparison to the predominant Malay population but nevertheless the small Chinatown area, or Kampung Cina, in Kuala Terennganu is very impressive with some fantastic heritage style architecture, a beautiful Chinese temple and some tremendous colourful murals and graffiti adorning the walls of the numerous small back lanes.
Kuala Terengganu’s Chinatown was first established by the Chinese community in the late 19th century. It was once a hub for commercial activities that helped shape Kuala Terengganu into what it is today. The Chinese built the traditionally designed shop houses according to their place of origin in China.
It is wonderful to wander along the main street of Jalan Bandar where you can find Chinese restaurants and numerous small coffee shops to stop for sustinence. Take time to appreciate the wonderful old heritage style shoplots many of which have been maintained and painted to a high standard. Look closely and you will also find some finely detailed Chinese calligraphy on some of the shoplot doors.
One part of the street has unfortunately suffered due to a large fire which destroyed many buildings – hopefully this area will be renovated again.
