Lake Kenyir in Terengganu State, Malaysia is an artificial lake which was created in 1985 by the Kenyir Dam on the Kenyir River. The lake provides water to the Sultan Mahmud Power Station and is the largest man-made lake in mainland South East Asia with an area of 260,000 hectares.
The area close to the Kenyir Dam was recently (February 2022) damaged significantly in a large storm which caused a massive landslide destroying a bridge on the road to the dam plus some of the large electricity pylons on the hillside. A temporary bridge has now been built but there is no access to the dam by the general public so you cannot view the lake from this location.
Driving further round to the north side of the lake you come to the main Kenyir Tourist Information Centre with a jetty offering boat trips and houseboats for rent. There is also the Lake Kanyir Resort & Spa here but unfortunately looks like this is now closed. A new bridge has been built over to the small Poh Island and a new resort has been built on that island but not operational as yet.
On the drive back from the lake we stopped at the wonderful restaurant Lembah Warisan which served up a large variety of local dishes including some lovely fresh fish from the rivers and lake.
