New E-Book just published on Amazon – A photographic journal of a trip to Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Indonesia is a giant lake filling an ancient supervolcano caldera. This is the largest lake in southeast Asia and one of the deepest in the world. I had always wanted to visit this location so we planned a trip and flew from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Medan in North Sumatra. We then drove the 176 km to the small town of Parapat on the lakeside and took a boat over to Samosir Island where we would stay for a few nights at Samosir Cottages in the village of Tuk Tuk to explore the region. Samosir is a large island at the centre of Lake Toba and is almost the size of Singapore.
To get to Lake Toba we flew from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Medan, Indonesia then after spending one evening in Medan we drove south over the hills to Parapat where a ferry transported us over to Pulau Samosir, a large island which dominates the lake.
We stayed at Samosir Cottages, a small resort in the village of Tuk Tuk on the banks of Lake Toba offering us wonderful views over the large lake. During our stay we had a really wonderful cultural show with local music and dance. Around this area there were some interesting sights with museums, churches and fascinating Batak style houses.
To see a larger area of the island we hired a small motorbike which gave an excellent insight into the rural life in remote parts of the island. However the trip turned out to be an exciting adventure after getting caught in a torrential rain storm and had to be rescued by the hotel staff in a 4×4 truck.
Lake Toba is a very interesting and scenic area to visit with some fascinating culture and history and is a relaxing and serene place for a few days visit.
This book with the many images, maps and annotated text should hopefully inspire you to visit this location for yourself to enjoy the beauty and wonder of this special lake.
