An early morning walk heading west from Charlestown took me along the Fife Coastal Path around Ironmill Bay. The path followed an old railway line, now covered by the undergrowth, and this was probably used back in the days when the lime kilns were active.
There was an interesting house tucked away in the woods with some old stone ruins of an ancient building in the front lawn. This was apparently the ruins of Wester Cottage which was a thatched roof cottage and was burnt down after red hot embers from a passing steam train lit the thatched roof. Wester Cottage was a matching cottage to Easter Cottage at the other end of Charlestown and is still standing, although its original thatched roof has long been replaced.
The coastal route stopped at the large Ministry of Defence naval armaments depot D.M. Crombie which was all fenced off. In a field closeby was a large Mongolian yurt which is used as a yoga centre.
Returning to Charelstown brought me back to the other end of the harbour area close to the lime kilns and offered some nice views over the Firth of Forth.
