Dollar Glen

Tucked away in the Ochil Hills near the small town of Dollar, Clackmannanshire is a small glen called Dollar Glen. It is a popular walk to walk up the glen to the medieval Castle Campbell which sits at the top of the glen. There are a variety of trails up both sides of the river and through the narrow, steep chasm.

The castle was the lowland seat of the earls and dukes of Argyll and chiefs of Clan Campbell from the 15th to 19th century. The castle was originally known as Castle Gloom, perhaps deriving from the gaelic word glom meaning chasm.

Dollar Glen is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and since my last visit, which was many, many years ago, the paths up the narrow chasm to the top of the glen are now in a bad state of disrepair. The castle was closed during this visit and again this is also needing much needed renovation works.

Returning to the bottom of the glen brings you into the small town of Dollar and the road leading down from the glen had a stunning display of cherry blossom in full bloom during our visit.
