Set in the beautiful Perthshire forest and close to the town of Dunkeld is The Hermitage which was an 18th-century pleasure ground for the Dukes of Atholl. Walking below the giant Douglas firs alongside the River Braan takes you on a magical walk up to the Black Linn waterfall and the picturesque folly known as Ossian’s Hall which stands overlooking the falls.
There are a variety of walks in this area from a relatively short 1.5 mile woodland walk to longer walks through the trails of the Dunkeld Path Network.
This was a nostalgic visit to this location as it had been many, many years since I last visited here. I remember on one occassion when I was very involved in scuba diving getting permission to scuba dive here during the winter, when our normal seaside locations were too rough. We entered the lower pool and then swam up through the narrow channel to the upper pool below the Black Linn waterfall. In this narrow channel which was somewhat wider at the bottom of the 20 ft channel we saw numerous large salmon resting awaiting their turn to jump up the falls. Sitting at the bottom of the upper pool looking up to the surface at the falls cascading down and surrounded by salmon was wonderous. An incredible experience.
