Just published on Amazon is my latest travel book detailing a wonderful 12-day cruise around the Mediterranean departing from Venice, Italy and stopping in Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia, Kerkira in Corfu, Greece, Naples in Italy, Civitavecchia in Italy, Livorno in Italy, Monte Carlo in Monaco, Marseille in France and finally finishing in Barcelona in Spain.
In June of 2013 we joined a group of friends on our first ever cruise. This was a 12-day Mediterranean cruise on the Holland America cruise ship, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, starting from Venice and visiting, Split, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Naples (Amalfi Coast), Civitavecchia (Rome), Livorno (Florence/Pisa/Cinque Terre), Monte Carlo (Èze/Nice), Marseille and finishing in Barcelona.
When it was first suggested to go on a 12-day cruise I agreed reluctantly thinking this was the start of the slow, downward spiral into old age and retirement. I had frightening visions of me sitting out on the aft deck of the ship in a large wicker chair covered with a tartan blanket and sharing relentless, boring evenings with groups of crusty old folks around a dinner of average buffet-style food and embarking on numerous organised coach tours with inane commentary by some local, flag-waving tour guide as they guided us through the touristy spots at the various destinations.
I was sadly to be mistaken in my perceptions of cruising and as soon as we boarded the ship in Venice my view was to take a very different turn and resulted in many other subsequent cruises to different parts of the world.
