Nostalgic Hawaii 1994 – Big Island Hawai’i

In 1994 we had a holiday trip to Hawaii and visited Honolulu in O’ahu, The Big Island and then the island of Kauai. For the first part of the holiday we stayed in Honolulu for a couple of days and then we flew to the Big Island for a few days of exploration.

These photos were captured on a Canon film camera and the negatives subsequently scanned and then post processed in Capture One Pro. The image quality in many cases is poor as many of the negatives were damaged by heat and humidity over time.

Volcano House Hotel

We stayed at Volcano House Hotel on the Big Island, right on the rim of the Halemaumau crater which was spectacular and every day we awoke to a wonderful view over the crater.

Crater Rim Walk

There was a walkway around the crater rim which gave us some great views of the extensive volcano crater.

Halemaumau crater

We took a very interesting walk right down into the bottom of the crater. It was fascinating to see how life such as colourful plants and ferns were struggling to live in this harsh environment.

Evident on the crater bottom were seismic sensors to detect any movements or changes in the activity!!

Thurston Lava Tube

We entered a large lava tube at the edge of the crater bottom …. called the Thurston Lave Tube.

Chain of Craters Road

We drove down to the coast along the road named Chain of Craters Road. At the side of the road was an incredible pattern of lava left after the various lava eruptions in the area.

The road ended where the lava had totally engulfed the road and here we could walk over the hard lava flow to observe the live molten lava flowing into the sea.

We returned to this same location later that evening to witness the lava flowing into the sea at night which was really incredible.

We headed back along the south coast and then up the west coast of the Big Island to where we spent our last night before departing for Kauai.

Along the route we came across some beautiful little wooden churches.
