Nostalgic China 1992 – Harbin

In February/March 1992 I made a business trip to China. After my visit to Daqing in the north of China we took a train to the nearby town of Harbin to the east where we would be taking a flight back to Beijing rather than the tediously long train ride. This gave us the opportunity to see a little of Harbin and visit the famous Ice Festival display that happens every year at this time.

These photos were captured on a Canon film camera and the negatives subsequently scanned and then post processed in Capture One Pro. The image quality in many cases is rather poor as many of the negatives were damaged by heat and humidity over time but this is a wonderful record of this incredible journey in China.

The Harbin International Ice and Snow is an annual winter festival that takes place with a theme in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, and now is the largest ice and snow festival in the world.

The ice structures were incredible and many had coloured lights wired inside so at night all the ice structures were lit from inside. Other ice blocks had other items such as flowers or crabs inside as decoration.

After visiting the Ice Festival we took a walk down to the river which of course was totally frozen over. It is here that the locals cut up large ice blocks which are then used to build the incredible structures at the Ice Festival.

Heading towards the airport for our flight we stopped by the roadside to buy a snack of freshly steamed sweet potatoes which were delicious.
