Nostalgic China 1992 – Daqing

In February/March 1992 I made a business trip to China. After arriving in Beijing I took a long train ride from Beijing to Daqing in the north of China accompanied by my Chinese agent.

These photos were captured on a Canon film camera and the negatives subsequently scanned and then post processed in Capture One Pro. The image quality in many cases is rather poor as many of the negatives were damaged by heat and humidity over time but this is a wonderful record of this incredible journey in China.

Daqing is a prefecture-level city in the west of Heilongjiang province of China. The name literally means “Great Celebration”. Daqing is known as the Oil Capital of China and has experienced a phenomenal boom since oil was discovered at the Daqing Oil Field in 1959.

Looking out from my hotel room I could see we were right in the middle of the Daqing Oil Field with beam pumps dotted around.

The oil field extended right under the lake and there were quite a number of oil wells located on the lake itself. Because this was winter time and the temperatures were in the region of -20 deg C or below I took a walk out to some of these wells simply by walking over the frozen lake.

It was interesting to walk the barren streets watching the locals commute to their workplace, many on bicycles in the very cold conditions.

Of course during my stay in Daqing and following the presentations I had made to the oil company there was the obligatory banquet at a restaurant with the compulsory downing of many glasses of maotai as we toasted each other.
