Nostalgic Bali 1992 – Mount Batur

In July 1992 during a visit to Bali my wife and I climbed Mount Batur, an active volcano which is located in the north central part of Bali, Indonesia and on the side of Lake Batur.

These photos were captured on a Canon film camera and the negatives subsequently scanned and then post processed in Capture One Pro. The image quality in many cases is poor as many of the negatives were damaged by heat and humidity over time.

From the road along the north side of Lake Batur we followed a trail up the volcano. It was relatively steep and as we got higher we got magnificent views over Lake Batur and over to Mount Agung.

As we climbed we were frequently asked to buy drinks from children carrying buckets full of iced drinks. We eventually gave in and bought a rather over-priced but much needed coke.

We headed along the rim of the caldera which was narrow and with a steep drop on either side.

Just below the rim of the crater were some steaming sulphuric vents to add to the atmosphere.

We continued along the length of the crater ridge and then headed down a steep slope of volcanic ash as an alternative route back down to the car park. The deep volcanic ash was very slippy and our feet slid uncontrollably as we descended. It was a long and tiring trek back but rewarding that we had conquered this volcano.

It was only 2 years later in 1994 that we returned to Bali again and were shocked to find that Mount Batur was erupting throwing up large volumes of gray volcanic ash over the area. It was incredible to view this erupting volcano and see where we had walked around the crater only 2 years before.
