The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges is an impressive avenue of ancient beech trees located at Bregagh Road, Stranocum, Ballymoney, County Antrim in Northern Ireland. This is a very popular tourist site, particularly more recently as this avenue of trees was used in the filming of the very popular Game of Thrones TV series.

The stunning avenue of beech trees were planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century. The trees were intended as a compelling landscape feature to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House.

Two centuries later, the trees remain a magnificent sight and have become one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland.

The difficulty at this site, given its popularity and the crowds of tourists and passing vehicles, is to be able to capture some images without any of these distractions. Ideally you should visit here early in the morning or late evening. We visited mid afternoon so there were quite a number of people and cars but luckily I managed to get a few “tourist free” images.

During our visit to The Dark Hedges we witnessed the arrival of 3 different coloured old Mini cars and the drivers then proceeded to set the cars up in the middle of the small narrow road under the beech trees to take some photographs. This made for some different and unique images with the ancient beech trees above and the not so ancient old Mini cars below.
