Guaymas is a city in Guaymas Municipality, in the southwest part of the state of Sonora, in northwestern Mexico. The city is 134 kilometres south of the state capital of Hermosillo, and 389 kilometres from the U.S. border. The city proper is mostly an industrial port and is the principal port for the state of Sonora. The city has a well-attended annual carnival, which has been held since 1888. Nearby, San Carlos and its beaches are major tourist attractions.
Walking around the city there were many abandoned and run down buildings and the whole place just looked rather run down. Behind the central Plaza of the Three Presidents was the dominant San Fernando catholic church which was under renovation at the time of our visit. At one side of the plaza was the local Government building or Edificio Municipal building. Walking along the seafront there was a colourful carnival which added a bit of colour to the otherwise drab cityscape.
