Topolobampo, Mexico

Our back-to-back cruise on Holland America’s ms Zuiderdam started in San Diego, cruised many ports in Mexico then stopped in Guatemala, Panama City, transited the Panama Canal, to Cartagena, Columbia , Half Moon Cay, Bahamas and finally finished in Miami, Florida.

Topolobampo is a port town on the Gulf of California, located in the municipality of Ahome in northwest Sinaloa, Mexico. It is the fifth-largest town in Ahome, reporting a 2020 census population of 6,198.

The port connects the region to the rest of northern Mexico via the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico (English: Chihuahua–Pacific Railway), which has a terminus in the nearby city of Los Mochis. Topolobampo also houses a terminal for ferry lines connecting the port to La Paz, Baja California Sur.

The town is the beginning of the Mexico–U.S. trade corridor La Entrada al Pacífico, which connects the port to Midland–Odessa, Texas.

Los Mochis

Los Mochis is approximately 24 km north from Topolobampo, Mexico and we decided to take a side trip there to visit a restaurant (Restaurante El Yaqui) of one of our touring friends. It would be an opportunity to experience so real local Mexican life plus the chance to sample some interesting local cuisine. After a bus journey of about 45 minutes we arrived into the town of Los Mochis and then walked through the streets to the restaurant.. The restaurant specialised in cow head soup (Cabeza de res) with tacos so it was interesting to taste this succulent dish and meet the lovely owners of the restaurant.
