Beech Tree Forest Walk  of Sao Lourenco, Manteigas, Serra da Estrela Nature Park, Portugal.

Close to the small hill town of Manteigas in the Serra Estrela Nature Park, Portugal you can take a wonderful walk in the beech tree forest of Sao Lourenco. Unfortunately there were some major forest fires in this areas a number of months ago but only around 10% of the forest was damaged. It is interesting now to see in these fire ravaged areas how the vegetation is regenerating providing a burst of colours against the stark blackened tree stumps.

On the walk you will pass Casa do Ronda, which is an old stone house now remodelled and equipped for the use of the community and nature tourism activities.

At the top of the hill you will come to a small chapel, Capela de Sao Lourenco de Manteigas which sits surrounded by a group of old oak trees.

Further along the hillside you will come to a large observation tower which is uded to spot forest fires.

Returning down the hillside you take a trail through some magnificent beech trees which were unharmed in the forest fires.
