Casa Das Obras, Manteigas, Portugal

We were lucky at the start of our Portugal road trip to stay in this most charming and historical country house in the small town of Manteigas close to the Serra da Estrela National Park. This house dates backs to the 16th century and has beautiful rooms and some stunning interior design of the period. Amelia, our hostess, made us very comfortable and provided a superb breakfast every day served in the magnificent breakfast room on the first floor. To get to the breakfast room you passed through an iron port-cullis style gate at the main house entranceway on the ground floor then up old stone steps with some wonderful paintings and art pieces on the wall.

There was a lounge on the ground floor where we had afternoon tea and next to this was a games room with a billiard table and small alcove with a chess set.

Our bedroom had a small ante room which had an ancient stone oven built into the wall as this part of the house was the original kitchen in the 16th century.

Adjacent to the house was a large garden and beautiful swimming pool surrounded by grape vines.

Our stay there was really comfortable and it was like staying in a museum with all the old artefacts and period furniture.
