Napier, New Zealand

Next stop on our New Zealand cruise after an overnight cruise from Picton was Napier. Napier is a delightful coastal city on the North Island of New Zealand  set amid the renowned wine-producing region of Hawke’s Bay. The city has a wonderful array of art deco style buildings all over the town having been rebuilt after a 1931 earthquake.  Along the tree-lined waterfront promenade the Marine Parade, the Pania of the Reef statue depicting a Maori maiden, is a symbol of the city.

We walked from town out to the Botanical Gardens which was quite small and had the interesting Napier Cemetery right next to it.

From the Botanical Gardens we walked back into town admiring the beautiful houses and buildings.

We had time to wander again throug the streets of Napier and along the pleasant waterfront before boarding the ship again ready for our departure.

At the departure dock they had arranged a wonderful sendoff with some old vintage cars and people dressed in period costume.
