Japan Cruise – Mar-Apr 2023 – Shimizu, Japan

We took a 2 week cruise on Holland America’s MS Westerdam ship starting from Yokohama and stopping at Naha and Ishigaki in Okinawa, Hualien and Keelung in Taiwan and Kagoshima, Aburatsu, Kochi, Osaka and Shimizu in Japan before returning to Yokohama.

Shimizu, Japan.

We sailed in towards Shimizu early morning and then magically through the morning mist and clouds the magnificent Mount Fuji appeared. As we sailed closer towards the port it became clearer – we were so lucky that the weather was clear and we had a stunning view of this iconic mountain.

Once docked at the port we spent some time out on the front bow of the ship taking some more photos of Shimizu and Mount Fuji before going ashore.

We took a taxi from the port round the bay to Miho no Matsubara, a scenic area on the Miho Peninsula. Its seven-kilometre seashore is lined with pine trees and offered more views of Mount Fuji.

There were some interesting small shrines as we walked through the wooded paths and next to the shore. At the far end of the shore to the southern end we got some alternative views of Mount Fuji.

After a nice lunch at a local Japanese restaurant we walked towards the Miho Shrine for a visit.

We walked through the houses to try and catch the ferry which went across the bay to the port area where our ship was docked. Unfortunately the ferry wasn’t running so we had the prospect of walking all the way back to try and get a taxi or bus. Luckily a kind local man tried to call a taxi for us, but no luck, so he very kindly drove us back to main road to the bus stop. A taxi came along immediately and we took this back to the port.

Back on the ship and before we departed I took my last few images and said farewell to Mount Fuji.
