Culross Palace

Culross in Fife, Scotland is a wonderful example of a burgh in the 17th and 18th centuries. You can walk through the cobbled streets of this small town and experience some great examples of historical architecture. Culross Palace, painted in a colourful, distinctive yellow colour, sits at the heart of Culross and is worth a visit to understand how this community was back in that time.

Culross Palace is in fact a late 16th century to 17th century mercahnt’s house. It was Sir George Bruce that built this “Great Lodging” or palace, the first portion in 1597 and then subsequently in 1611 after George Bruce was knighted. Sir George Bruce was a very successful merchant who had a flourishing trade with other Forth ports and other countries. He had interests in coal mining, salt production and shipping. He was apparently the person who built the first coal mine which extended under the sea.

Culross Palace was never a royal residence although it was visited by James VI in 1617. TheNational Trust for Scotland have restored and maintain the palace and the gardens at the rear of the building.

A number of rooms in the palace were used in the filming of Outlander and the gardens were used in the episode with Claire in the herb garden of Castle Leoch.
