A trip to Shanghai, China to visit friends for Christmas gave us the opportunity to explore this incredible city. It was a city of contrasts, from the ultra-modern Pudong area with its high rise office buildings and modern shopping malls to the small backstreets and lanes of the Old City of Shanghai on the west bank of the river.
Shanghai is China’s largest city and a global financial hub with a population of around 25 million. The city is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River, with the Huangpu River flowing through it. Originally a fishing village and market town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to both domestic and foreign trade and its favorable port location.
From Shanghai a high speed train journey takes you out south west to the beautiful city of Hangzhou on the banks of West Lake presenting a completely different perspective and serene atmosphere in contrast to the buzz of the big city of Shanghai. It was a pleasure to walk around the circumference of the large scenic lake and get an insight into local life with boats plying the lake, locals doing their tai chi or taking part in some dance classes and some fascinating temples and gardens to visit on the route.
The food both in Shanghai and Hangzhou was really excellent and a great opportunity to sample some of the most incredible choice of Chinese cuisines.
This book will give you a brief introduction to the city of Shanghai and an overview of Hangzhou. Hopefully the many images, maps and annotated text will provide some inspiration for you to visit this incredible part of China.
