Egypt holds an incredible wealth of ancient megalithic monuments and countless historical artefacts highlighting the rich, deep civilization of the country. The starting point of this book was Cairo, a busy and chaotic city but full of interesting sights to see. The Cairo Museum (or Museum of Ancient Antiquities) is an excellent place to get a perspective of the long and rich heritage of this country and to view some of the incredible artefacts taken from from a number of tombs.
Just 20 km south of Cairo is the Mit Rahina Museum located in Memphis which was the ancient capital of Inebuhedj. Here you can see the astounding colossal limestone statue of Ramesses II. Other highlights of the museum include an alabaster sphinx of the New Kingdom, two statues of Ramesses II that originally adorned Nubian temples, and the huge stone beds on which the sacred Apis bulls were mummified before being placed in the Serapeum at Saqqara.
Close to Memphis and 30 km south of Cairo is the Saqqara Necropolis which was an ancient burial ground of Egyptian pharaohs and royals. Saqqara contains numerous pyramids and a number of mastaba tombs. The most famous pyramid is the Step Pyramid of Djoser.
The Giza Pyramid Complex is world famous for the iconic Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These are incredible structures and a visit inside the Great Pyramid is an experience you will never forget. Some evenings you can witness an excellent laser light show at the Giza Plateau which highlights the history and details about the Pyramids, the Sphinx and other temple structures. Next to the Pyramids and the Sphinx is the Valley Temple of Khafre exhibiting some outstanding stonework and engineering.
These World Heritage sites in Egypt are well worth a visit at least once in a lifetime. Hopefully this book with the photographs, maps and annotated text may inspire you to travel to Egypt and see them for yourself.
