Nostalgic Scotland 2003 – The Forth Bridges

During a visit to Scotland in January 2003, I captured some images of the two Forth bridges: the Forth Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge, from two different perspectives. I shot the photos from South Queensferry looking north and then from North Queensferry looking south. In 2003, of course, there was no third bridge, the Queensferry Crossing was only completed and opened in August 2017.

The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge across the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, 9 miles west of central Edinburgh. It is considered as a symbol of Scotland and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designed by the English engineers Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker.

The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension bridge in east-central Scotland. The bridge opened in 1964 and at the time was the longest suspension bridge in the world outside the United States. The bridge spans the Firth of Forth, connecting Edinburgh, at South Queensferry, to Fife, at North Queensferry.

All the images here were made with my original Canon D30 digital camera (the very first digital SLR from Canon) sporting a 3.1 MPixel sensor! It’s still satisfying to be able to reprocess these images with the latest software and get some pretty decent results.
