Saguenay, Quebec

After leaving Baie-Comeau we headed up the St Lawrence and then into the narrow Saguenay Fjord and docking at La Baie.

It was rather cold and windy when we disembarked from the ship but we were welcomed by groups of locals all dressed in period costume and performing some traditional music and dance for us.

We sampled the frozen maple lollipops which were given to us as we arrived.

We had booked a ship’s excursion tour which comprised a coach trip down the fjord firstly stopping at a beautiful viewpoint in the Saguenay Fjords National Park overlooking the fjord.

We then drove on and stopped in the small town of L’Anse-Saint-Jean to visit the beautiful old covered bridge, Pont du Fabourge.

The bridge was built in 1929 from lumber siding. The inside of the bridge was adorned with some local art pieces.

After a brief lunch at the small jetty at L’Anse-Saint-Jean we boarded a small cruise boat which then took us for a leasurely cruise back up the fjord to La Baie.

There were some dramatic cliffs that plunged into the deep fjord and at Cape Trinity there was a large Statue of Our Lady of Saguenay on top of the cliff.

Along the way there were also some beautiful waterfalls tumbling into the fjord.

On the northern bank of the fjord we passed by the small village of Sainte-Rose-du-Nord.

We arrived back at the port just in time to re-board the Zuiderdam for our departure on the last leg of the cruise to Quebec City.
