Europe Road Trip – Day 4 – Mt. Titlis, Engelberg, Switzerland

In September 2008 we did a circular road trip around Europe starting in Frankfurt, Germany and travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and finally back to Frankfurt Germany.

From Beckenried we drove up to Engelberg where there was a cable car to the summit of Mt Titlis. Titlis is a mountain of the Uri Alps, located on the border between the cantons of Obwalden and Bern. At 3,238 metres above sea level, it is the highest summit of the range north of the Susten Pass, between the Bernese Oberland and Central Switzerland.

The cable car system connects Engelberg (996 m (3,268 ft)) to the summit of Klein Titlis (3,028 m (9,934 ft)) through the three stages of Gerschnialp (1,262 m (4,140 ft)), Trübsee (1,796 m (5,892 ft)) and Stand (2,428 m (7,966 ft)). By the time we reached the summit the clouds and weather had come in so we firstly visited the glacier cave and then had some lunch in the restaurant till the weather cleared. The lunch was surprisingly good quality given our location.

After our lunch luckily the weather had cleared and we got some spectacular views over the mountain ranges all covered in snow.

We walked for a short distance along the small snow-covered track along the ridge and then returned to the cable car station.
