Europe Road Trip – Day 3 – Basel, Switzerland to Beckenried, Switzerland

In September 2008 we did a circular road trip around Europe starting in Frankfurt, Germany and travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and finally back to Frankfurt Germany.

Basel, Switzerland

We stayed in Hotel Merian right on the River Rheine in Basel. In the morning we took a walk out over the Middle Bridge and did a circular walk using the next Wettsteinbrücke bridge.

Walking through the small streets on the other side of the river we got a good view back to the Middle Bridge and our hotel. There were some colourful houses, interesting small shops, restaurants, museum and churches.

We visited the Basel Minster church which was right on the banks of the River Rheine and from her you got a wonderful panoramic view of the river.

On the other side there was again some interesting colourful buildings and houses.

From Basel we drove east to our next stop which was Lucerne on the banks of Lake Lucerne.

Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne, a compact city in Switzerland known for its preserved medieval architecture, sits amid snowcapped mountains on Lake Lucerne. Its colorful Altstadt (Old Town) is bordered on the north by 870m Museggmauer (Musegg Wall), a 14-century rampart. The covered Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), built in 1333, links the Aldstadt to the Reuss River’s right bank.

We had a walk around the Kapellbrücke area by the banks of Lake Lucerne and admiring the beautiful colourful buildings of the city.

Beckenried, Switzerland

We drove further eastwards along the shores of Lake Lucerne to the small town of Beckenried where we would be staying overnight at Hotel Edelweiss. Beckenried is a delightfull small town running along the banks of Lake Lucerne.

We had a pleasant walk through the small town visiting the beautiful Kirche St. Heinrich.

We got a wonderful panoramic view over lake Lucerne from our hotel.

We were going to stay at this location for 2 nights as the next day was going to be a full day to take a trip up to Mount Titlis.
