Fox Glacier, New Zealand

In October 2006 we did a trip to New Zealand starting with a few days in the North Island covering Aukland and Rotorua. From Rotorua we flew to Blenheim in the South Island via Wellington. The bulk of the trip covered the South Island starting from Blenheim and driving around the island anti-clockwise visiting Picton, Nelson, Punakaiki, Hokitika, Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson, Haast, Queenstown, Te Anua, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Moeraki, Oamaru, Mount Cook and finishing in Christchurch.

From Franz Josef Glacier we drove south towards Fox Glacier where we had a helicopter trip arranged to take us for a flight over the Franz Josef Glacier and the Fox Glacier. But first we took a short drive to Lake Matheson which gave us some spectacular views of the Mount Cook mountain range with the beautiful calm lake in the foreground.

After our visit to Lake Matheson we drove to a small airfield at Fox Glacier where we met our pilot for our helicopter flight over the Fox Glacier and the Franz Josef Glacier.

We flew right up over the Franz Josef Glacier where we had hiked the day before – it was fascinating to see it from this very different perspective.

At the top of the glacier we reached the large snow field which had some incredible patterns of thick, deep snow.

We landed at a flat spot on top of the snow field and had the opportunity to get out of the helicopter and see the magnificent mountain scenery. The sun was so bright reflecting off the bright, white snow it was dazzling to our eyes. We took some photographs in this magical spot before we had to leave for our return trip.

We then took off and made our way down the Fox Glacier valley back to the airfield below.

This was a memorable trip indeed and one that is highly recommended for anyone coming to this area of New Zealand.
