In March, 2002 I made a business trip to Damascus, Syria to attend an oil and gas conference/exhibition. During this visit I had the opportunity to see a little bit of the city and capture some images.

Damascus is the capital of the Syrian Arab Republic; it is also the country’s largest city, following the decline in population of Aleppo due to the battle for the city.

The city is somewhat rundown but there is some interesting architecture to be seen with some beautiful old mosques and buildings. The Ancient City of Damascus is the historic city centre of Damascus, Syria. The old city which is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, contains numerous archaeological sites, including some historical churches and mosques

The main souq in Damascus is the Al-Hamidiyah Souq which is located inside the old walled city of Damascus. It is an interesting visit and inside this covered market there are many interesting shops selling local arts, handicrafts and jewellery.

At one end of the souq, you can see the Temple of Jupiter which was built by the Romans beginning during the rule of Augustus and completed during the rule of Constantius II.

The small cobbled streets of the old walled city are wonderful to explore. The Old City of Damascus with an approximate area of 86.12 hectares is surrounded by ramparts on the northern and eastern sides and part of the southern side. There are seven extant city gates, the oldest of which dates back to the Roman period.

The Umayyad Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus, located in the old city of Damascus, is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world.
