Bolfracks Estate & Gardens

Bolfracks Estate is a 4,000 acre privately owned family estate surrounded by the glorious arena of highland Perthshire. Perched on the banks of the River Tay the estate enjoys some of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes.

A working farm, Bolfracks is committed to modern organic farming principles producing exceptional quality organic beef cattle and lamb. Forestry is another area in which sustainable practice is important to the estate. Plantations of spruce, larch, birch and native hardwoods are managed for specialist uses, while the pine plantation timber is processed into Biomass fuel and fencing material.

Bolfracks House has very special gardens which are an oasis of peace and colour with an impressive collection of rare and unusual plants. The garden is open to the public and provides excellent views over the Tay valley.

  1. I am a descendant of the Menzies clan who once owned Bolfracks. My great great grandfather was General Sir Charles Menzies of the Royal Marines and actually born at Bolfracks. I have been very interested in seeing these pictures and what is happening on the estate today. I personally visited the estate in 2003, just after the death of the then current owner of the Hovis family, and I believe was the gentleman who restored much of the garden as it was back in 2003. With personal interest in the property, and researching my background, it is great to know that is being loved and cared for. I reside in Auckland, New Zealand and would appreciate being able to use some of your delightful pictures in a book I writing on my behalf of my own family.

      1. On further research, I have since discovered that General Sir Charles Menzies, was actually born in Stirling. I have also learned that Bolfracks was also once a village before the “clearances”. History is a very interesting topic, and it pays to do full research before making claims such as I have done earlier! I was following up what my mother, nee Jean Hester Menzies, had in her possession when she had started out on researching her ancestry. As she died in 1974, there were no computer search engines at her finger tips, as is my case. I need to set the record straight. Elisabeth Bayly
