Huon River Cruise, Tasmania

Huon River, Franklin, Tasmania viewed from my friend’s house

During a 2 week trip to Tasmania, Australia I stayed with an old university colleague, Martin Riddle, who lives in Franklin, Tasmania. Franklin sits on the Huon River estuary and Martin kindly took us on a relaxing cruise along the Huon River which was a great introduction to the Tasmanian lifestyle.

We sailed out the estuary giving us a good view of the town of Franklin, then turned around and sailed back upstream passing an interesting small canal which had been dug on the south side of the river bank.

As we headed north and upstream the water was like glass creating some wonderful reflections of the trees on the river banks.

It was a hot and sunny afternoon with beautiful clear skies …… no aircraft contrails over this part of Australia as it is too far south.

After returning to shore we were then kindly invited to go aboard a boat moored at the small jetty. This was the “Skomer”, a traditional Scottish trawler built by Herd and Mackenzie in Buckie, Scotland. This was a rather nostalgic visit for me as I had sailed on a sister ship, “Kytra” many years ago during a marine science expedition in Brittany, France. I had spent 2 weeks living and diving from “Kytra” so going aboard “Skomer” gave me a vivid flashback to those days. Everything aboard “Skomer” was so familiar with the main galley layout and the cabins below. The owner has meticulously refurbished this ship and is somewhat more luxurious than “Kytra” on which I had spent 2 weeks on. We were given a complete tour of the ship including the engine room which was immaculate.

This was a lovely start to our trip around Tasmania and of course it was wonderful to meet up with my old friend Martin after so long.
