Iceberg

After our visit to the Falkland Islands during our 16 day cruise aboard the MS Zaandam we had a 2.5 day sail north through the South Atlantic to our next port of call which was Montevideo, Uruguay. I thought it would a good chance to relax during this sail and packed away my camera thinking there would be little to see or photograph. How wrong I was.

We departed Stanley, Falkland islands on the evening of 26th October 2018 and the next morning as we sailed northwards, some 250 nautical miles or so north of Falklands, the Captain made an announcement that he had spotted a large iceberg off the starboard bow and he was diverting eastwards slightly from our course to give us all the opportunity to see this incredible spectacle. The iceberg was uncharted and was approximately 900 nautical miles north of Antarctica where it had originated and was drifting slowly northwards at about 0.5 knots. It had probably been in the water for around 4-5 years during its journey northwards from Antarctica.

When I first went out on deck I could not see the iceberg then I eventually did and the size of it astounded me …. it was like a large island. As we got closer we got the opportunity to get an incredible view of the iceberg which was around 130m high, therefore probably around 800-900m of it lay under the water. The Captain maintained a distance of around 1 nautical mile from the iceberg and slowed up allowing us to get some spectacular photographs.

So this was a surprising treat for all of us on this long sail across the South Atlantic and an encounter we will never forget.
