The Castle of Mey is located in Caithness, Scotland a few miles along the north coast from John o’ Groats. It was formerly known as Barrogill Castle and was in a semi-derelict state in 1952 when the estate was purchased by the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
The Queen Mother restored the property for use as a holiday home and she regularly visited the castle in August and October from 1955 until her death in March 2002; her last visit was in October 2001.
The Queen Mother made the property over to the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust which has opened the castle and the beautiful gardens to the public regularly since her death. It is now open 7 days a week from 1 May until 30 September each year.
The Trust opened a new Visitor Centre in 2007 and the visitor numbers that year topped 29,000. The Visitor Centre has a gift shop and a nice restaurant where you can a lovely lunch before or after your visit.
