From the north side of Stromness in Orkney, Scotland and just past the Stromness Golf Club at Ness Point you can take a beautiful coastal path that runs up the coast towards Black Craig and further up to Skara Brae if you want.
At the start of this walk and just a short walk from Stromness, stands Ness Battery. This important relic of Orkney’s wartime heritage once defended Scapa Flow against enemy attack, and after being closed for many years it is now open for guided tours.
The small path goes along the coastline passing colourful fields of wild flowers on one side and the stunning coastline with rocks, reefs and white beaches on the other side. Some wonderful dry-stane dykes can be seen along the way. There are a few seats at intervals along the path made from the local stone making it a great place to stop and rest and take in the sea views.
A short distance along the path from Stromness and ness Point you come to the Warebeth Cemetery which is always interesting to take a look through before heading on up the coastal path.
You get wonderful views over to the island of Hoy which has some of the highest mountains in Orkney. You may spot the Northlink ferry coming in towards Stromness on its daily run.
The pristine white beaches, the wonderful clear waters and the colourful wild flowers on the side of the path makes for a beautiful scene.
Numerous seabirds can be spotted on this walk including the common oystercatcher which seems to be the noisiest bird of all. You may also see gannets, fulmars, guillemots and geese flying in over the coast.
