St. Mary’s Church and cemetery is a small and interesting site in the tiny village of Burwick in Orkney, Scotland.

Burwick is a small village and harbour on the island of South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. It is the closest Orkney harbour to the Scottish mainland and is the terminus of a passenger ferry which operates in the summer to John o’Groats in Caithness.

The church was built around 1790, was also known as South Kirk and is allegedly built on the site of one of the earliest chapels in Scotland. It was interesting to walk around the cemetery that surrounds the church and see the large number of family plots within the enclosed walled grounds. Many of the grave markers are heavily covered in lichen and relate to members of the Budge family.
