Pitlochry Dam & Fish Ladder

Pitlochry in Perthshire, Scotland sits on the River Tummel between Loch Ericht, Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel and right next to the town is the Tummel hydro-electric scheme for the generation of hydro-electric power.

We took a walk from the west side of the river up to the dam and then returned by the east side giving us some great views of the dam, the fish ladder and the river.

The Pitlochry fish ladder allows salmon to swim upstream during the breeding season and hence bypass the dam on the river.

The ladder was constructed as a result of a 1943 Act of Parliament which laid a duty of care on the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board to preserve fish stocks in the waterways encompassing its power schemes. The form and design were created by the fish biologist John Berry.

It was completed in 1951 alongside the dam for the hydro-electric power station as part of the Tummel Hydro-Electric Power Scheme and was installed in 1952. It was the first of its type in Scotland.

Walking down the river we watched quite a number of fishermen on the river fishing for salmon. We crossed back over the river downstream of the dam using the beautiful pedestrian suspension bridge and then had a wonderful lunch at the Port Na Craig Restaurant right on the river front.
