Sydney is situated in a unique location by the sea and with the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House makes for some great views from the waterside. As our cruise ship sailed under the Sydney harbour bridge at dawn after our 13 day cruise to Fiji the beautiful soft light highlighted this city in the very best way. Rays of sun broke through the clouds over the city as we sailed past the entrance to Darling Harbour and moored at White Bay Cruise Terminal.
We had one day in this great city before heading back home to Malaysia so took the opportunity to take a drive around the headlands south of the city. First stop was Woolloomooloo and a brief visit to the famous Harry’s Pie shop, Cafe de Wheels.
Driving through the Royal Botanical Gardens we walked to the waterside to get a different view of the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the city skyline from the southside.
Driving past Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay and Rose bay we headed over the headland and were soon at the very famous Bondi Beach. People were actively swimming and surfing here and you can understand why this is such a popular spot. However I certainly prefer quieter spots so the next bayss furher south were a lot more appealing.
Heading south down the coast road we first arrived at Tamarama Beach, which sits between two prominent headlans on the Bondi to Coogee Walk, with 80 metres of shoreline. It has great surfing conditions, but prone to strong currents.
Around the next headland was Coogee Beach which is popular among families for the safe swimming conditions. We took a walk from the south side of the beach and up to the north headland giving us great views over the sea and the beach.
On the north side of the beach there is a natural rock pool swimming pool which is popular. The headlands here have interesting rock formations.
After the walk it was good to have a rest and a cold beer at the Coogee Pavilion.
By early evening we were back downtown at Circular Quay and took a walk here which offered great views of the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the city as the light went. Many people were out here walking or just sitting having a drink watching the spectacular view.
