Kirkjugólf

Close to the small village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in south Iceland is a strange rock formation known as Kirkjugólf or “Church Floor” which is an 80m² expanse of columnar basalt, eroded and shaped by glaciers and waves.

You can only see the tops of the columns and the flat hexagonal shapes look distinctly like a man-made floor, hence the name “church floor”. Columnar basalt is formed when lava flow gets cooled and contraction forces build up. Cracks then form horizontally and the extensive fracture network that develops results in the six sided formation of the columns. This lava formation has similar origins to the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland.

The village Kirkjubæjarklaustur (Icelandic for “church farm cloister”, often referred to locally as just Klaustur) is a village in the south of Iceland on Ring Road 1 and is the only place between Vík and Höfn which offers services, which includes a fuel station, a bank, a post office and a supermarket. Nearby tourist attractions include the Laki craters, the Eldgjá and Skaftafell, all in Vatnajökull National Park.
