Amarante, Portugal

En-route to the start of a wine cruise in the upper Douro River in Portugal we stopped at the very scenic town of Amarante with its mixture of Renaissance/Medieval/Romanesque architecture. The town sits in Northern Portugal beneath the beautiful Serra do Marão mountains and surrounded by many vineyards that produce the famous vinho verde (green wine). There is the impressive São Cancola bridge in the middle of the town crossing the Taméga River taking you to the São Goncalo church.

Next to the bridge is the excellent Confeitaria da Ponte pastry and sweet shop which is worth a visit for a nice cup of coffee and some of the local cakes and sweets.
