Japan Cruise – Mar-Apr 2023 – Keelung, Taiwan

We took a 2 week cruise on Holland America’s MS Westerdam ship starting from Yokohama and stopping at Naha and Ishigaki in Okinawa, Hualien and Keelung in Taiwan and Kagoshima, Aburatsu, Kochi, Osaka and Shimizu in Japan before returning to Yokohama.

Keelung, Taiwan.

Arriving into Keelung in Taiwan we saw a large statue on the nearby hill which was the Big Buddha Temple at Zhongzheng Park so we decided to make a visit there. We took a taxi up to the temple complex and then planned to walk back down. The temple was rather run down and they had many cheap vendors selling trashy tourist souvenirs at the top. However the view over the harbour to our ship was good .

As we walked down the hill at the other side of Zhongzheng Park there was another large temple complex known as the Zhupu altar and an older rundown temple further down called the Keelung Ci’an Palace Temple

From the base of Zhongzheng Park we took a taxi to Zhengbin Fishing Port to see the colourful buildings that surrounded the port. The harbour area was delightful to walk around and looking over from the north side of the harbour there was a wonderful panorama of all the colourful houses reflected in the still water of the harbour.

We headed back to the city and then visited the Keelung Night Market which had a horde of food stalls and the wonderful old Dianji Temple. After exploring the temple we sampled some of the local food at the market food stalls.

From the Keelung Night Market area we wandered back towards the port where our ship was docked. There were some interesting arty statues of men holding umbrellas on the harbour front.

Sailing out from the harbour early evening we had some great views of the city and surrounding areas before heading north to Japan again and our next port of call, Kagoshima.
