Lenggong is a wonderful old small town, sitting in Lenggong Valley, Perak, Malaysia about 80km north of Ipoh. This is still a very rural area with numerous small kampungs and surrounded by green vegetation and limestone hills. The Lenggong valley is one of Peninsular Malaysia’s most important areas for archaeology, as excavations have revealed many traces of Malaysia’s prehistory in locations around the valley. During our visit to Lenggong we stayed at the wonderful Rumah Tiang 16 hosted by Nash Jalaludin and his wife.

Walking up the main street of Lenggong is like a walk back in time with some wonderful old heritage style architecture, with wooden shophouses, small shops, cafes, restaurants and other small businesses. The locals are very friendly on on many occasions I was warmly welcomed to Lenggong. This is the Malaysia many will remember and love and it’s a really wonderful area to stay for a few days to sample the local kampung style food, experience the old-style nostalgic lifestyle of a small Malaysian town and visit many of the interesting locations around the valley.

I found my local fix of roti telur at a small Indian mamak stall – this was my 2nd breakfast but couldn’t resist the wonderfully fluffy roti. My first breakfast was at Loh Dee Wan Ton Mee where I had some great char siew noodles cooked over a log fire.

Ther are some iconic buildings in the town and some have been renovated and painted in the original colours they were painted in many years ago, including the brightly painted local UMNO building.
