During a Mediterranean cruise in 2013, we stopped at Monaco and took a day trip along the French Riviera coast to Nice.
Nice, capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera, sits on the pebbly shores of the Baie des Anges. Founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for the 19th-century European elite, the city has also long attracted artists. Former resident Henri Matisse is honored with a career-spanning collection of paintings at Musée Matisse. Musée Marc Chagall features some of its namesake’s major religious works.
There were a wonderful array of small narrow streets to wander through which had beautifully ochre coloured painted walls. There were many interesting small shops, cafes and restaurants to visit.
We visited a market in the middle of Nice which had a wide variety of antiques and books for sale.
The waterfront had a long gravel beach which was a popular spot for tourists to relax.
On the waterfront were some large expensive hotels and the Casino Du Palais De La Méditerranée.
