Wine Chateaus of Bordeaux

During June 2012 we visited the Saint-Emilion and Bordeaux area and during this trip we had the chance to visit a number of wineries in the Bordeaux and Margaux area.

Chateau Rauzan-Gassies

Château Rauzan-Gassies is a winery in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. Château Rauzan-Gassies is also the name of the red wine produced by this property. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

Chateau Prieure-Lichine

Château Prieuré-Lichine, previously Château Le Prieuré and Château Prieuré-Cantenac, is a winery in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region of France, in the commune of Cantenac. The wine produced here was classified as one of ten Quatrièmes Crus (Fourth Growths) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

The Château produces a second wine under the label Château de Clairefont (also called Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine since 2008), and a Haut-Médoc, Le Clocher du Prieuré.

Chateau Margaux

Château Margaux, archaically La Mothe de Margaux, is a wine estate of Bordeaux wine, and was one of four wines to achieve Premier cru (first growth) status in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. The estate’s best wines are very expensive, with a standard-sized bottle of the Château Margaux grand vin retailing at an average price of $639. The estate is located in the commune of Margaux on the left bank of the Garonne estuary in the Médoc region, in the département of Gironde, and the wine is delimited to the AOC of Margaux.

The estate also produces a second wine named Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, a third wine named Margaux de Château Margaux, as well as a dry white wine named Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux which does not conform to the Margaux appellation directives.

We stopped in the small village of Margaux and had lunch at a restaurant with some local wines of course.

Chateau La Tour De Bessan

The Château La Tour de Bessan in the Margaux appellation belongs to Marie-Laure Lurton. This experienced wine maker also owns the Château de Villegeorge in the Haut-Médoc. Both domains are certified by Terra Vitis, a certification system that upholds environmentally friendly viticulture practices since 2003.

The contemporary architecture of the cellars at Château La Tour de Bessan certainly doesn’t go unnoticed: the cellars are housed in a 1934 building that was renovated and transformed into the production site in 1999 by the architect Vincent Defos du Rau.

Chateau Kirwan

Château Kirwan is a winery in the Margaux appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The wine produced here was classified as one of fourteen Troisièmes Crus (Third Growths) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

Its second wine is called Les Charmes de Kirwan.

Château Kirwan has 40 hectares (99 acres) of vineyards, planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot.
