Europe Road Trip – Day 6 – Innsbruck, Austria to Salzburg, Austria

In September 2008 we did a circular road trip around Europe starting in Frankfurt, Germany and travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and finally back to Frankfurt Germany.

Swarovski Kristallwelten, Wattens, Austria

The Swarovski Crystal Worlds is a museum, located in Wattens, Austria which was just east of Innsbruck on our route to Salzburg so we stopped for a visit. The museum was built in 1995 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Austria based crystal company Swarovski.

Kitzbühel, Austria

Next stop was the quaint town of Kitzbühel. Kitzbühel is a small Alpine town east of Innsbruck, in the western Austrian province of Tyrol. It’s a fashionable winter resort, known for the annual Hahnenkamm downhill race. Upscale shops and cafes line the streets of its medieval center. Museum Kitzbühel chronicles the history of the town and the area’s winter sports, with paintings by local artist Alfons Walde. Its rooftop terrace has sweeping town views.

Hallstatt, Austria

From Kitzbühel we drove to Hallstatt. Hallstatt is a village on Lake Hallstatt’s western shore in Austria’s mountainous Salzkammergut region. Its 16th-century Alpine houses and alleyways are home to cafes and shops. A funicular railway connects to Salzwelten, an ancient salt mine with a subterranean salt lake, and to Skywalk Hallstatt viewing platform. A trail leads to the Echern Valley glacier garden with glacial potholes and Waldbachstrub Waterfall.

We drove to Salzburg where we would spend the night. Our hotel looked over the small town and we got a lovely view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress lit up. The next day we would explore the town.
