Picton, Havelock and Nelson, New Zealand

In October 2006 we did a trip to New Zealand starting with a few days in the North Island covering Aukland and Rotorua. From Rotorua we flew to Blenheim in the South Island via Wellington. The bulk of the trip covered the South Island starting from Blenheim and driving around the island anti-clockwise visiting Picton, Nelson, Punakaiki, Hokitika, Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson, Haast, Queenstown, Te Anua, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Moeraki, Oamaru, Mount Cook and finishing in Christchurch.

From Blenheim we drove along the north coast of the South Island and our first stop was Picton. Picton is known as a gateway to the islands and inlets of the Marlborough Sounds. The Edwin Fox Maritime Museum is a 19th-century former convict and cargo ship. EcoWorld Aquarium shelters and rehabilitates native animals such as tuatara reptiles and blue penguins. Nearby, the Queen Charlotte Track traverses coastal forest, skyline ridges and bays.

We then drove along the beautiful Queen Charlotte Drive giving us wonderful views out over the sea.

En route to Nelson we stopped for lunch in Havelock to sample the famous green-lipped mussels. Havelock sits at the head of Pelorus Sound, one of the Marlborough Sounds, and at the mouth of the Pelorus and Kaituna Rivers.

In Nelson we stopped to visit the World of WearableArt & Classic Cars Museum which was interesting. It had some great vintage cars and even a replica 3-wheeler yellow Reliant as used by Del Boy in Only Fools & Horses TV programme.
