Nomadic Tribal Village, Tibet

Nomadic Villagers House in Laduocun, Tibet

On our drive back from Namtso Lake to Lhasa we stopped in a small village to visit some of the nomadic people who now live there. These nomads had earlier lived a nomadic lifestyle herding their livestock in the high plateau areas of Tibet. Some of these nomadic people are now housed  in small villages and this village or settlement that we visited gave us the opportunity to experience some of their local food which they make.

We entered one of the houses and were welcomed into the living room where we sat and tried the local yak butter tea. This tea is rather salty and comes with a blob of yak butter floating in it.

The most important crop is barley. Flour milled from roasted barley, called tsampa, is the staple food of Tibet. Tsampa is roasted flour, usually barley flour and sometimes also wheat flour. It is usually mixed with the salty Tibetan butter tea. We were shown how this tsampa was made and had the chance to eat a little.

One of the young men of the house then brought out his ukelele and performed some local Tibetan songs for us.

The kitchen inside had a basic cooking stove and some beautiful painted cupboards.
