Wat Ounalom is located on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh close to the Royal Palace. It was established in 1443 and comprises 44 separate buildings. It is regarded as the most important was in Phnom Penh and is the central institution of Cambodian Buddhism.
The main complex has a stupa that contains what is believed to be an eyebrow hair of The Buddha and has an inscription in Pali.
During the Khmer Rouge period Wat Ounalom suffered significant destruction but it was rapidly restored afterwards and has become one of the most important religious and tourist sites in Phnom Penh.
