Lake Maggiore, Italy

Lake Maggiore or Verbano is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. Lake Maggiore extends from the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland far into the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy. Thanks to its mild climate, there is lush, Mediterranean vegetation along its shores. In the hinterland is a wild and romantic mountain landscape with breathtaking views. It is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino.

Grand Hotel Dino

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Dino which sits on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in the small town of Baveno offering wonderful views over the lake. This hotel was enormous and indeed very grand with some beautiful decor throughout and well appointed rooms.

Baveno

Baveno is a small town on the west bank of Lake Maggiore and from the pier here you can take ferries out to Isola Superiore, Isola Bella and the small town of Stresa. In the town you can visit the beautiful church, Chiesa dei Santi Gervaso e Protaso with the small Battistero di San Giovanni next to it.

Isola Superiore (Isola dei Pescatori)

Isola dei Pescatori is an island in Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. As the most northerly of the three principal Borromean Islands it is also known as Isola Superiore and, with a population of 25 in 2018, it is the only one to be inhabited all year round. This small island is a joy to walk around with some small narrow streets and some great restaurants.

Isola Bella

Isola Bella is one of the Borromean islands of Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 metres from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 metres long by 400 metres wide and is divided between the Palace, its Italianate garden, and a small fishing village. The palace is interesting to visit and there are some beautiful gardens attached to this.

Stresa

Stresa is a resort town on Italy’s Lake Maggiore. Landmark buildings include Villa Pallavicino, with its gardens and zoo, and the Grand Hôtel des Îles Borromées, where author Hemingway once stayed. Boats run from the waterfront to the Borromean Islands, home to palazzos, villas, a fishing port and the Museum of Dolls and Toys. Overlooking the lake, Monte Mottarone features a bobsled rollercoaster and botanic gardens
