Lake Garda, Italy

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is a popular holiday location in northern Italy, between Brescia and Milan to the west, and Verona and Venice to the east. The lake cuts into the edge of the Italian Alps, particularly the Alpine sub-ranges of the Garda Mountains and the Brenta Group. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last ice age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Brescia (to the south-west), Verona(south-east) and Trentino (north).

Gardone Riviera

We stayed at Hotel Savoy in the lakeside town of Gardone Riviera on the west shore of the lake offering great views over Lake Garda and a nearby ferry point where you could travel around the lake to various locations. Walking up the hill from the lakeside took you to the upper part of the town where there was some beautiful architecture and a number of great little restaurants and cafes to enjoy. The Chiesa di San Nicolò da Bari church was beautiful inside and also had some spectacular views towards the lake.

Salo

Just south of Gardone Riviera and a short 10 minute ferry ride away is the small town of Salo. This town has a very long promenade which is beautiful to walk along to take in views of the lake and to sit down at one of the many small restaurants and cafes to eat and drink. Just behind the promenade there are some wonderful small streets where you can shop or just admire the wonderful architecture. The Duomo di Santa Maria Annunziata church looks quite plain from the outside but the interior is spectacular.

Le Morette Di Valerio Zenato Winery

We took a short trip to the southern part of Lake Garda and visited the small Le Morette Di Valerio Zenato winery where we had a short tour of the facilities, and then more importantly, some sampling.

Garda

Another day trip by ferry took us over to the eastern side of Lake Garda to visit the town of Garda. Here we walked many of the small streets where there were small markets, shops and many cafes and restaurants. We visited two of the churches, Chiesa di Santo Stefano and Parrocchia di Santa Maria Assunta.
