Mercado de Abastos

Mercado de Abastos is a fascinating food market in the old town of Santiago de Compostela in Spain where you can buy a huge variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, shellfish, meat, breads, cheese and wines. After the cathedral this is the second most visited attraction in Santiago. There are also a number of restaurants where you can eat and drink to sample all the local Galician produce.

The market has been supplying the people of Santiago de Compostela with quality food and other popular items since 1873, primarily produced in the surrounding areas. Although the current building dates from 1941, the market has been here for three centuries. Today, the market is managed by a cooperative of 70 food producers and other business owners.
