After a 2 day sail from Sydney at the start of our New Zealand cruise on Holland America’s ms Noordam we reached New Zealand at dawn and headed into Milford Sound. Milford Sound is a long fjord in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island with towering mountains and stunning waterfalls and is part of the Fiordland National Park. Milford Sound runs 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point – the mouth of the fiord – and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 metres or more on either side. I had visited here many years ago so it was good to return to this magnificent part of New Zealand.
After entering the fjord we sailed slowly up the narrow channel getting some wonderful close views of the mountains and waterfalls. The first large waterfall we passed was Stirling Falls. Stirling Falls is a spectacular waterfall at a staggering 151m in height. Stirling Falls is three times the height of Niagara Falls, but the 1,300m mountain behind it disguises this incredible height. Stirling Falls is the famous waterfall Hugh Jackman ‘jumped off’ in the movie Wolverine.
Further up we passed the Bowen Falls (also known as Lady Bowen Falls) which is located near the head of Milford Sound.
At the head of Milford Sound we took some time to admire the snow covered mountains before turning around and heading back down the length of the sound.
